East West Birding Tour takes you around western to eastern Dzongkhags in search of some of the rare bird’s species in the Himalayas. Your journey begins from Paro and end in Guwahati (Assam). You will camp at some of the most prominent areas in Bhutan for Bird watching, well equipped with facilities and safe for night halt.

DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrival in Paro Airport.

  • Our representative from Bhutanitis Travels will receive you at the Airport and transfer you to the hotel.
  • In the afternoon visit the Paro Rinpung Dzong (fortress) and Ta Dzong (national museum).
  • In the evening birding along the Paro River searching for one of the biggest target birds, Ibisbill, other species we will be looking for are Plumbeous Redstarts, Oriental Turtle Dove, Rock Pigeon, River Lapwing, Olive-backed Pipit, Red-billed Chough, Common Hoopoe, Black-tailed Crake, Grey-backed Shrike, Blue Whistling Thrush, White-collared Blackbird, Black Bulbul, White Wagtail, Eurasian Tree and Russet Sparrow.
  • Dinner and overnight stay at a hotel in Paro.

Day 2: Paro to Thimphu.

  • After an early breakfast, drive to the cool alpine meadow of CheleLa pass (3890m). This is the highest motor able pass in Bhutan.
  • Here we will be able to see 3 different species of Pheasants, Colorful Himalayan Monals, Blood Pheasants and Kalij Pheasants. Beside this you’ll also see other birds like Rufous-bellied and Darjeeling Woodpecker, Large Hawk and Eurasian Cuckoo, Black Eagle, Eurasian Jay, Yellow-billed Blue Magpie, Spotted Nutcracker, Long-tailed Minivet, Chestnut-bellied Rock Thrush, Rufous-gorgetted and Ultramarine Flycatcher, Indian Blue Robin, White-browed Bush Robin, Orange-flanked Bush Robin, Blue-fronted Redstart, Hodgson’s Tree creeper, Rufous-vented, Coal, Green-backed and Grey-crested Tits, Buff-barred Warbler, Tickell’s Leaf, Blyth’s Leaf and Large-billed leaf Warblers, White-throated, Black-faced, Chestnut-crowned and Spotted Laughing thrushes, Dark-rumped and White-browed Rose finches.
  • After lunch hike to Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s nest) one of the most famous 17th century monastery of Bhutan.
  • In the evening, drive to Thimphu.
  • Dinner and overnight stay will be in a hotel in Thimphu.

Day 3: Thimphu to Punakha.

  • After breakfast, drive to Punakha.
  • Halt in Dochula Pass (3150). Our day starts from this pass with the breathtaking views of eastern Himalayan ranges.
  • The mixed forests of hemlock, fir, oaks and rhododendron here is good habitat for many good species including, Fire-tailed Myzornis, White-throated, Spotted and Striated Laughing thrushes, Oriental, Indian, and Large Hawk Cuckoos and Rufous-gorgeted Flycatcher.
  • Afterwards we descend down to the LamPelri Botanical Garden and take the nature walk for about few hours.
  • Here we will be able to sight Brown Parrotbil, Barred Cuckoo Dove, Wedge-tailed Green Pigeon, Maroon Oriole, Streak-breasted Scimitar Babbler, Scarlet Finch, Spot-winged Grosbeak, Eurasian Jay, Grey-winged Blackbird and Strong-footed Bush Warbler.
  • Later on drive to Punakha valley, along the drive you’ll look for the species like Chestnut-tailed Starling, Great and Golden-throated Barbet, Long-tailed Shrike, Spotted Dove, Ultramarine Flycatcher, Red-vented Bulbul and Common Kestrel.
  • After arrival in Punakha you will drive along the Mo chu river looking for the species like Grey Treepie, White-throated Fantail, Hair-crested and Ashy Drongo, Verdieter Flycatcher, Large, Small and Rufous-bellied Niltava, Green-backed and Black-throated Tits, Black and Mountain Bulbul, Grey-hooded and Blyth’s Leaf Warbler, River Lapwing, Crested Kingfisher and it offer chance good chance for Ibisbil.

Day 4: Punakha to Phobjikha.

  • After breakfast, drive towards Phobjikha valley , stopping along the way looking for Brown Dipper, Ward’s Trogon, Yellow-rumped Honey guide, Cutia, Grey-bellied Tesia, Grey-hooded, Blyth’s and Black-faced Warblers, Green-tailed and Mrs. Gloud’s Sunbird, Striated Prinia, Blue-capped and Chestnut-bellied Rock Thrush, Pale-Blue Flycatcher, White-capped River Chat, White-tailed Nuthatch, Rusty-flanked Tree creeper, Yellow-browed Tits and few different species of Cuckoos.
  • Before reaching Pelela pass we will take the road to Phobjikha valley, crossing Lawala pass the vegetation changes into dwarf bamboo, here you’ll searching for the species like Spotted, Chectnut-crowned and Black-faced Laughing thrushes, Spotted Nutcracker, Great and Brown Parrotbills, Oriental Skylark, White-browed Short wing Yellow-billed Blue Magpie, chestnut-headed Tesia, Red-billed Chough, Large-billed and Whistler’s Warbler, Slender-billed Scimitar Babbler and Oriental Skylark.
  • Dinner and overnight halt will be in a hotel in Phobjikha.

Day 5: Phobjikha to Trongsa.

  • After early breakfast, we will drive to the Pelela pass (4000) and spend the morning hours birding along the old road at Pelela for high altitude species like Spotted Laughing thrush, Himalayan Griffon, Great and Brown Parrot bill, Plain Mountain Finch, White- winged and collared Grosbeak, Spec, Spotted Nutcracker, Slaty-blue, Verdieter and Dark-sided Flycatcher, Grey-sided Bush Warbler and varieties of Tits, Some of the key birds you’ll looking her include Himalayan Monal, Dark-rumped Rose finch, Scarlet Finch and Gold-naped Finch.
  • Along the drive to Trongsa along the drive, we will also be looking for the species like Speckled Wood Pigeon, Ultramarine Flycatcher, Golden-breasted and White-browed and Rufous-winged Fulvetta, Streak-breasted and Rusty-cheeked Scimitar Babbler. Black-winged Cuckoo Shrike, Yellow-rumped Honey guide, Nepal House Martin, Blyth’s Swift and White-throated Needle tail, Black Eagle and many more.
  • Dinner and overnight stay will be in a hotel in Trongsa.

Day 6: Trongsa to Bumthang.

  • An early start to Yongtola (3500m) an hour and half drive from your hotel, Here you will spend your morning session searching for the species like Scaly-breasted Wren Babbler, Chestnut-headed Tesia, Slender-billed Scimitar Babbler, Red-headed Bullfinch, Fire-tailed Myzornis, Grey-crested, Coal, Rufous-vented and Yellow-browed Tits, Bar-throated Minla, Green-tailed and Mrs. Gould’s Sunbird, Yellow-bellied and White-throated Fantail, White-browed Shortwing, Dark-sided and Rufous-gorgeted Flycatcher, Grey-sided and Hume’s Bush Warbler. Later in the afternoon continue your drive to your hotel in Chummey valley.
  • In the evening drive to the temple up the mountain to have the very close view of the Himalayan Monal, the place here offer the best chance to photograph the Himalayan Monal because in the morning and evening, the birds comes very close to the monk quarter for feeding, other birds you’ll looking for include Black-billed Magpie, Oriental Skylark, Russet and Eurasian Tree sparrow.
  • Dinner and overnight halt in a hotel in Bumthang.

Day 7: Bumthang to Sengor.

  • In the morning we drive from Bumthang to Sengor going over Thrumshingla pass (3800m). Thrumshingla is the prime habitat for Blood Pheasants and also hold other high altitude species like, Snow Pigeons, Orange-flanked Bush Robin, Golden and White-browed Bush Robin, Fire-tailed Myzornis, Spotted Nutcracker, Red-billed Chough, Fire-tailed Sunbirds, Greats Parrotbills, Stripe-throated and Rufous-vented Yuhinas, Grey-crested, coals, Rufous-vented Tits, White-browed Fulvata, Dark-rumped Rose finch, Plain-backed Thrush, White-collared and Grey-winged Blackbird, Rusty-flanked Tree creeper Buff-barred, Ashy-throated, Blyth’s and Large-billed leaf Warbler.
  • Later in the evening we will be birding around Sengor looking for Satyr Tragopan. Sengor is known as the hotspot for Satyr Tragopan. Other birds you will be looking out here include Bar-winged and Scaly-breasted Wren Babbler, Gold-naped Finch, Hoary-throated Barwing, Bar-throated and Red-tailed Minlas, Whistler’s and Grey-hooded Warbler and Slender-billed Scimitar Babbler. In the evening you will also try for the Himalayan Owl, which comes around your campsite.

Day 8: Sengor to Namling to Yongkala.

  • Today we will hit the Bhutan’s wet subtropical forest and one of the finest birding areas in the Himalayas. For the next day we will be birding the lush forested valley searching for Bay Woodpecker, Great and Golden-throated Barbets, Rufuos-necked Hornbill, Wedge-tailed Green Pigeon, Mountain Hawk Eagle, Orange-bellied Leaf bird, Maroon Oriole, Scarlet and Grey-chinned Minivets, White-gorgeted, Little Pied, Ultramarine and Verdieter Flycatchers, Little Forktail, Black-throated Prinia, Grey-hooded, Grey-cheeked and Chestnut-crowned Warblers and many more.
  • Dinner and overnight halt will be in campsite.

Day 9 & 10: Yongkala to Limithangs Road.

  • We spend two entire day birding upper and lower Limithang road, we may see following birds, Rufous-throated, Long-billed and Pygmy Wren Babbler, Rufous-necked Hornbill, Lesser Yellownape, Grey-headed Woodpecker, Speckled Piculet, Coral-billed, Slender-billed, Streak-breasted Scimitar Babblers, Scarlet Finches, Blue-throated, Great and Golden-throated Barbets, Barred Cuckoo Dove, Black Eagle, Long-tailed Shrike, Grey Treepie, Grey-chinned and Scarlet Minivets, Ashy, Spangled and Black Drongos, Small, Large and Rufous-bellied Niltavas, Sapphire and Blue-throated Flycatcher, Green-backed and Black-Spot Yellow Tits, White-breasted and Black-throated Parrotbills, Golden-breasted, Rufous-winged, Yellow-throated and Rufous-winged Fulvettas, Blue-winged, Grey-sided and Rufous-necked Laughing thrushes and many more.

Day 11: Yongkala to Trashigang.

  • After a final morning birding in this wonderful habitat, we head toward Trashigang with several stop along the forested road looking for the Himalayan Bulbul, Black-tailed Crake, Crimson Sunbird, Common Green Magpie, Stop at Korila pass. Here the forest is rich in mosses and lichens. Birds we may be likely to see here are Steak-breasted Scimitar Babblers, Grey-winged Blackbird, Hoary-throated Barwing, Long-tailed Minivet and Bhutan, Scaly and Blue-winged Laughing thrushes.
  • In the evening you are free to explore the town of Trashigang, one of the main trading centers in the eastern Bhutan.
  • Dinner and overnight stay will be in a hotel in Trashigang.

Day 12: Trashigang to Morong.

  • After early breakfast in the hotel we head toward Morong our campsite. On the drive there are possibilities to see Hill Prinia, Barred Cuckoo-Dove, the delightful Red-billed Leiothrix, small flocks of Striated Yuhinas, Streaked Spiderhunter, Rusty-fronted Barwing, Orange-bellied Leafbird, Common Green Magpie and Red-faced Liocichla, We will also have another chance for Beautiful Nuthatch, one of the main target birds of Bhutan..
  • Dinner and overnight halt in the campsite at Morong.

Day 13: Morong to Samdrup Jongkhar.

  • After early breakfast at the camp we will be heading to a lower elevation than we have been able to visit so far on the trip. We will target the varieties of low elevation specialties including Pied Falconet, the extremely rare Dark-rumped Swift, Pin-tailed Green Pigeon, Sultan Tit, Black-backed Forktail, Red- headed Trogon, Black Eagle, House Sparrow (rare in Bhutan), several species of Cuckoo, Jungle Babbler, Grey-sided Laughing thrush and many more.
  • Dinner and overnight stay will be in a hotel in Samdrup Jongkhar.

Day 14: Samdrup Jongkhar to Guwahati.

  • After breakfast, drive to Guwahati.
  • Today your journey will take you through the Indian plains of Assam, where the wildlife of these plains is totally different from the Himalayas. The species we may see on the drive are Little Cormorant, Indian Pond Heron, Egrets, Black Ibis, Black Drongo, we will also keep our eyes for very rare species like Lesser and Greater Adjutants.
  • Dinner and overnight stay will be in a hotel in Guwahati.

Day 15: Departures from Guwahati Airport.

  • After breakfast, drive to the Airport and Farewell.
