Matsutake Festival is yet another festival to celebrate the start of another mushroom season alongside the people of Ura. The season brings with it the opportunity not only to sample some truly delicious meals of Bhutan but to cultivate a deeper insight into the rhythms of Bhutanese village life.

Learn to identify and harvest the fabled wild Matsutake mushrooms of Bhutan. Prized by gourmets in Japan, this fungus is native to the forests of Ura valley in central Bhutan. Hike the valley’s fragrant trails and give in to the thrill of discovering your own private patch of this most coveted of mushrooms. You can always visit the region’s exquisite temples and monasteries which rank amongst the most prized historical treasures of Bhutan.

This Matsutake Festival is scheduled during the 4th weekend of August and takes place in beautiful Ura valley. Ura is renowned for being one of the most picturesque valleys in the entire country. Its inhabitants, the Uraps are a cheerful, hospitable people. Ura provides one of the most authentic experiences of traditional rural Bhutanese life available. At the Matsutake Festival, visitors will learn to identify these fabled mushrooms as they embark on mushroom picking excursions around the pristine forests and hills. They’ll be able to sample delicious Matsutake recipes, engage in songs and dances together with the locals, hike through the stunning Himalayan landscape and even relax in traditional open-air mineral baths.

DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1:  Arrival in Paro

  • Our representative from Bhutanitis Travels will be there at the airport to receive you and transfer you to the hotel.
  • Visit the nearby Ta Dzong and Paro Ringpung Dzong.
  • Dinner and overnight stay at hotel in Paro food and accommodation will be arranged as per your reservations

Day 2:  Paro (sightseeing) To Thimphu

  • After breakfast, take a hike to the tiger’s nest (Paro Taktshang), the most visited tourist destination in Bhutan.
  • After lunch, Drive towards Thimphu.
  • Dinner and overnight stay in hotel in Thimphu.

Day 3: Thimphu (sightseeing)

  • After breakfast, visit Kuenselphodrang- the world’s largest statue of sitting Buddha.
  • Visit TashichoDzong –The administrative seat of Bhutan.
  • After lunch visit National Memorial chorten , and changangkha lhakhang.
  • Dinner and overnight stay in hotel in Thimphu.

Day 4:  Thimphu to Punakha

  • After breakfast, begin your journey towards Punakha, on the way to Punakha halt in Dochula for photography and visit Royal Botanical Park in LamPelri.
  • After crossing Punakha visit Chimi lhakhang and Punakha Dzong.
  • Dinner and overnight halt in Hotel in Punakha.

Day 5: Punakha to Bumthang

  • After an early breakfast, head towards Bumthang,
  • After the day long drive, check into the hotel for relaxation and rejuvenation.
  • Dinner and overnight stay in hotel in Bumthang.

Day 6: Matsutake Mushroom Festival Day 1 –Bumthang

  • After breakfast, drive to Ura valley , attend the Matsutake Festival,
  • Drive back to your hotel , on your way back visit the Mebartsho (the burning lake)
  • Dinner and overnight stay in hotel in Bumthang.

Day 7: Bumthang sightseeing

  • After breakfast, explore the valley of Bumthang, commonly known as the Switzerland of Bhutan.
  • After lunch, visit Jambay lhakhang, and Jakar Dzong.
  • Dinner and overnight stay in hotel in Bumthang.

Day 8: Bumthang to Phobjikha

  • After an breakfast , begin your journey towards Pbobjikha, halt in Pelela pass for photography
  • After the day long journey, arrive in Phobjikha and check into a hotel and retreat for the day.

Day 9:  Phobjikha sightseeing

  • After an early breakfast, explore the valley of the black necked cranes. Get ready to capture the most scenic photographs of this journey.
  • Visit Gangtey – another place guaranteed to amaze your mind, spend time with the monks at the Gangtey lhakhang.
  • Dinner and overnight stay in Hotel in Phobjikha.

Day 10: Phobjikha to Thimphu

  • After breakfast , drive towards Thimphu
  • Dinner and overnight stay in Hotel in Thimphu.

Day 11: Thimphu to Paro

  • After breakfast , visit Dechenphu lhakhang and the Takin preserve in Thimphu
  • After lunch , drive towards Paro
  • Dinner and overnight stay in Hotel in Paro

Day 12: Paro Departure

  • After breakfast, drive to Airport for Departure.
